The Issue at Hand

Inner-city girls are faced with a myriad of pressures including, but not limited, to the following:

• drug and alcohol abuse
• premature sex
• poor peer relationships
• sexual abuse
• sexually transmitted diseases
• gang violence
• domestic violence

The consequence is a startling rise in low self-esteem, high school dropout rates, suicide, and teen pregnancy.

• 4 out of 5 teenage girls who committed suicide gave clear warning signs
• African-American and Hispanic girls’ out-of-school suspension and expulsion rates are higher than that of any other group of girls and also higher than that of white and Hispanic boys
• High schools in inner-city and low-income neighborhoods have minority dropout rates that hover in the 40-50% range
• Nearly four in ten teenage girls whose first intercourse experience happened at 13 or 14 report that the sex was unwanted or involuntary.
• The main rise in the teen pregnancy rate is among girls younger than 15
• The racial composition of the US prison and jail population is approximately 60.21% African American (non-Hispanic), 20.29% Hispanic, 13.44% White American (non-Hispanic), and 6.06% Other

Go Girlz Inc. is seeking to illicit immediate change that can be both seen and felt within our communities. With the support of local schools, volunteers and community resources, we can provide the guidance, training, and opportunities our girls need to accomplish goals that may not have been realized under normal circumstances. We not only provide our girls with positive role models, but we show them how to become the change in their own communities.
